Is it possible to speak in italics? The already viral trend on TikTok

italicsLet the language be a living organism, changing and subject to changes in society we have always known that. The history of Italian is even more so. Dante tried to give it a complete form, composing the Divine Comedy in perfect fourteenth-century Florentine style. And, then, it was the turn of Pietro Bembo and of the theorization of the language, handed down and praised by the Accademia della Crusca. At least until Alessandro Manzoni decided to “rinse the clothes in the Arno”.

A highly respected literary story which, today, continues with cursive lessons by Elisa Esposito. 700 thousand followers on TikTok she is the new teacher of the Italian language. Or better, of speaking in italics. A trend that went viral thanks to a video lesson made up of drawling vowels and millions of views.

A real social trend, which has already conquered other countries as well. In the United States, for example, theaccent Valley Girl has been featured in millions of ironic videos. The target speech is that of the rich girls of California of the 90s. In short, Branda and Kelly from Beverly Hills 90210.

Equally provocative is the cörsivœ illustrated in the video lessons of prof Esposito. This provocatively inspired way of speaking to the rich and spoiled girls of today is just that the revival of a language already known on radio and TV: that of feignedly sophisticated characters, ostentatiously rich, elegant and classy.

Speaking in italics on TikTok: is it really the language of the new generations?

It is undeniable: to master cörsivœ you really need an online course. And, in fact, those of Elisa Esposito are real lessons, which teach to cripple syllables and drag the vowels. A provocation, she means, but she has its more than 782 thousand amused and indignant followers.

The effect is a real chant, in which each vowel is lengthened almost to imitate the Milanese cadence. The reality, however, is that in addition to being a parody of a well-defined social group, it represents the new way of speaking for young people.

A phenomenon attributable to the musical environment and, of course, to the artists most loved by Gen Z. Just think of the radio successes of Sangiovanni, Blanco or Fedez and Luis Sal who, often, become real representatives of a Italian (spoken) in italics.

Here then is the slight controversy raised by the cörsivœ and by terms like “amïo” it could, in fact, hide a new social phenomenon or even a new facet of the Italian language. The arduous sentence at the Accademia della Crusca.
