Hugh Laurie in the director’s version

This new adaptation of the novel by the famous English crime writer is all the work of Hugh Laurie. The actor, in fact, in addition to acting in a cameo (he is Dr. James Nicholson), is also the producer, screenwriter and director of all the episodes. “I didn’t fully understand how much a challenge it would be,” said the artist (he’s a renowned musician too) to the site Deadline. “I was just motivated by a kind of almost childlike enthusiasm for the story, for the character Lucy plays, for the devious riddle at the center of the novel and for the world she describes. “I always thought this novel was unusual. It is unique in that it possesses a kind of lighter spirit, at times comic. There is no trace of it in Poirot’s stories, which have been immensely successful. So much so that I believe that in 1934, when she wrote this novel, she too was baffled … Her editor and her agent must have pulled their hair out when she said she didn’t want to do another Poirot. And I absolutely love the story for this very reason. Plus, I think there is something contemporary about the novel. I think the characters and the story are keeping up with the times ».

Why watch Why didn’t they ask Evans?

Because a classic thriller, well constructed and well directed. The two protagonists are credible as amateur detectives who find themselves mired in a bigger situation than themselves. The dialogues – and their bland flirtation (we are still at the turn of the 20s and 30s of the last century) – are captivating and at times funny.

Hugh Laurie directs the episodes with liveliness and some stolen makeup from his many years around the sets. He then helps to have asked two friends like Emma Thimoson and Jim Broadbent to embellish the series with a hit and run that, however, remains well impressed.

If you like the atmospheres to the Downton Abbey and the verdant view of the mansions of the English countryside, this is the series for you.
